Bleeding gums are common. They are not normal.

- If your palms bled every time you washed your hands, you wouldn't call it normal. Yet pink-tinged spit at the basin gets ignored for years — usually with the logic that brushing softer will fix it. It does the opposite.
- ## What bleeding actually means
- Bleeding gums are inflamed gums, and inflammation has one overwhelming cause: plaque sitting at the gum line long enough to harden into tartar. The gum responds like any tissue under attack — swollen, tender, quick to bleed. Brushing "more gently" leaves more plaque, which inflames things further. The instinct is exactly backwards.
- ## The two-week test
- Here is what we tell patients to try before anything else: brush twice daily along the gum line at a 45-degree angle, and clean between teeth once a day — floss or interdental brushes, whichever you'll actually use. Do it properly for two weeks. Early gingivitis largely reverses; gums firm up and the bleeding stops. It may bleed a little more in the first days as you disturb what's been sitting there. Persist.
- ## If two weeks changes nothing
- Then the problem is below where your brush can reach — hardened tartar under the gum, or pockets forming between gum and tooth. That's professional-cleaning territory, and possibly early periodontitis, the stage where the bone anchoring your teeth quietly dissolves. Periodontitis is painless almost to the end, which is why "nothing hurts" is the most dangerous sentence in gum disease.
- ## Bleeding that deserves faster attention
- Bleeding with gums that look pale rather than red, or that bruise easily elsewhere
- Bleeding in pregnancy — hormones make gums over-react to even small amounts of plaque; a hygiene visit mid-pregnancy is safe and worthwhile
- Bleeding alongside diabetes — gum disease and blood sugar push each other in a two-way street
- A six-monthly scaling visit takes half an hour and keeps most people out of this entire article. If it's been more than a year — or you can't remember — that's your answer.
